I’ve discovered the Chinese section in the mount pleasant community library. I might hang out there more often, meet some people, get to know my language some more. There were white people playing farmville nearby but it’s still exciting.

Had a rainy good time at the Chinese new year parade. we arrived right on time and the streets were full. It was a bit rainy, so over time people left, I found myself at the front of the crowd. Yay! It started off like watching commercials, floats from Rogers, CBC, some Dreamworks movie and political groups. Then the interesting floats and groups came through. There was the Toi Shan Benevolent Society, I think that’s where my grandma is from. Or maybe it was Shan Toi…I spent the rest of the parade googling it on my iPhone…
Traditional Chinese meal I had growing up: coconut rice, hardboiled eggs with soya sauce a shredded dried pork. Didnt have soya milk but did find some pabst blue ribbon..

and i’m finished university!
Today I received an email with photos of my dad getting our house ready for chinese new years. I briefly reminisced about what we did growing up and now I wish was at home celebrating this occasion. We’d always go to Marco Polo restaurant, a big banquet dinner hosted by the Edmonton Chao Chow Benevolent Association where my father was a member. We’d sit in a table of ten, get served the crispiest chow mein, the most entertaining chinese drummers/lion dancers, and a toonie in a red pocket if I was lucky. Those were the days
Why does the nearest chinese grocery store close at 6pm and the Safeway closes at 11pm?
Seriously, where can I get some chinese sausages late at night?
Being more familiar with asian literature is now on my list of to do’s. The other day I found myself in MacLeod’s books, with books from floor to ceiling hoping to find something by Xue Xinran, Haruki Murakami, Yukio Mishima and Gao Xingjian but sadly all I found was a bunch of Amy Tan’s books (of course!) and this giant Holy Bible…
